Varanus Island natural gas plant returns to full production capacity

APACHE Energy has restored its Varanus Island natural gas plant in West Australia to full capacity, over a year after the major pipeline explosion on 3 June 2008.

The natural gas plant has returned to pre-explosion production levels of 360TJ of gas a day. Apache Energy says the repair project is still underway and in its final phase.

The explosion cut WA’s gas supplies by a third and drained around $A2b from the economy.

The State Government is in the process of prosecuting Apache Energy, alleging the company violated the petroleum pipelines act by failing to keep the pipeline in good condition and repair.

The Government claims the gas pipeline ruptured at a corroded area which was in need of maintenance.
