THE TASMANIAN Government has launched a software tool developed by the CSIRO which will assess the impact of pesticides in the state’s waterways.
The Pesticide Impact Rating Index (PIRI) can be used to determine the likelihood of a pesticide moving off-site under prevailing conditions, such as heavy rain or winds.
The government says the program will allow users to input local variables such as soil condition, slope, soil type and vegetation cover.
According to the CSIRO, the software has been tailored to Tasmanian conditions after a two-year scientific research program.
The government has a made a ten year agreement with the scientific body to distribute the software throughout the state and to train pesticide-users in its operation.
