BHP Billiton began production at the $1.16b Neptune oil facility on 8 July 2008, over six months later than originally scheduled.
The 50,000 barrel-a-day centre in the Gulf of Mexico was slated for a December 2007 start date but was pushed back to the end of March 2008.
However, the start date was again pushed back after anomalies were discovered in the facility’s structure in March, forcing the evacuation of workers.
The company says Neptune is in about 1,300m of water and has access to about 150m barrels of recoverable oil.
