Devil Creek natural gas project gets environmental approval

APACHE Energy’s $850m Devil Creek natural gas project has been approved by the Western Australian Environment Minister, Donna Faragher, subject to stringent conditions.

The greenfields gas development, near Dampier, is expected to provide up to 220TJ of gas per day to the Dampier-to-Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline. It will use reserves from the Reindeer gas field.

According to Faragher, vegetation, marine environments and greenhouse gas emissions were among the issues assessed during the environmental approval process.

She says the project has been approved on the condition that Apache Energy rehabilitates the areas of native vegetation that will be disturbed during construction.

Apache Energy also minimise any disruptions or long-term impacts to the local turtle, coral, seagrass and algal communities during development.
