CSIRO working towards global ‘water footprint’ standards

THE CSIRO has joined a global group of private- and public-sector organisations, known as the Water Footprint Network, to promote the sustainable and efficient use of the world’s fresh water resources.

The Water Footprint Network is looking to promote the concept of ‘water footprinting’ as a way to address the negative impacts on freshwater systems that can arise from the production and consumption of goods and services.

The CSIRO says it has conducted several water footprint case studies on various products and has been helping to develop water footprint calculation methods.

According to the research body, international standards and agreed methods for product water footprinting are urgently needed.

The CSIRO says it will work to establish these agreed methods so companies can apply footprinting practices to set priorities and make decisions.

The Water Footprint Network says companies in areas where water is abundant may still be susceptible to the impacts of water scarcity through their supply chains. These companies must understand the risks and develop appropriate management and growth strategies.
