Bulletin board to prevent gas profiteering

THE WEST Australian Government has introduced a public bulletin board for gas buyers and sellers in the wake of the Apache Energy pipeline explosion on Varanus Island.

The explosion occurred on 3 June 2008 and has crippled the state’s gas supply. Authorities say the industry is losing hundreds of millions of dollars every week.

The state’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the introduction of the bulletin board. There have been reports of profiteering and price gouging since the incident.

WA’s Energy Minister, Fran Logan, says the bulletin board will bring transparency to gas transactions and prices. The gas supply is not expected to be restored until December 2008 at the earliest.
