Hurricane season continues to disrupt oil production

BHP BILLITON has once again shut down production and evacuated personnel from its Neptune project as Hurricane Ike approaches the Gulf of Mexico.

The company was forced to evacuate the facility when Hurricane Gustav entered the Gulf on 25 August. It had only just begun to return staff earlier this week after remaining closed until the storm completely subsided.

The facility's opening date was also twice delayed by a total of six months earlier this year.

The US Minerals Management Service says personnel have been evacuated from around 200 offshore platforms which lay in the storm’s predicted path.
