BHP investigates major petroleum investments

BHP BILLITON says it is assessing the viability of five “major” petroleum projects in Australia.

The company is looking at developing the Macedon gas field to supply the Western Australian market as well as the Thebe, Scarborough and Browse fields off the north-west coast, for liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

The mining giant is forecasting a ten per cent annual compound growth in oil and gas output right through to the 2011 financial year as output increases at new fields in the Gulf of Mexico and Australia.

The company is discussing plans with its partner Exxon Mobil to develop the 226b cubic metre Scarborough field for the north Asia LNG market.
